Shower Door Maintenance

It is important to know the proper cleaning, care, and maintenance for your shower door to keep them looking great for years to come. Soap scum and water spots can often leave your shower door looking dingy, dirty, and cloudy. Left alone, water spots and soap scum can stain your beautiful shower enclosure. Harsh cleaning materials and carelessness can physically damage your shower door. With the right information, you can keep your shower door enclosure in prime condition.

Water Spots and Soap Scum

Daily maintenance on your shower door is the best practice to avoid having to scrub hard build up and stains. Use a squeegee on the glass door after each use to help minimize or even eliminate any water spots. A squeegee is a tool that acts as a manual windshield wiper with a long handle. The rubber blade at the end is used to scrape a surface free of water.

For framed shower enclosures, a microfiber cloth can be used in addition to the squeegee. Use the cloth to wipe off the frame of the door to clean soap residue and avoid water spots on the frame. The cloth is perfect for reaching all the nooks and crannies in the shower like around handles or in corners of the enclosure and door. This is also good for preventing rust on metal-like frames.

Another way to maintain your shower door is by preventing water and soap from building up on the glass in the first place. EnduroShield coating can be used to prevent any type of buildup. This permanent coat is infused into your glass door during the manufacturing stage and doesn’t need repeated application. Taking measures such as this will keep your shower door looking clean and clear.

Bar soap is a big contributor to soap scum and cloudy shower doors. Bars of soap contain a mineral called talc, or talcum power. This mineral is the cause for buildup on shower enclosures. There are some bar soaps that do not contain talc, or liquid soap can be used.

Physical Damage

Finally, maintain your door by keeping it solid, unscratched, and undamaged. For swing doors make sure never to let it slam shut and be aware of opening the door if it’s in close proximity to other bathroom furniture. Shower doors are often made of glass and should be handled with care to avoid cracking, scratching, or shattering it.

It’s important to avoid using any abrasive materials to clean your shower door. Cloths that are gritty or dirty can leave small scratches on the glass surface. Also, some non-rinseable, mist-type cleaners can be dangerous to you shower door. They can damage components of your shower door. Use of these types of cleaners can even void the warranty on your shower door.

A framed, frameless, or heavy glass shower enclosure is a great way to increase your home’s property value and make your bathroom a beautiful area. Use the proper maintenance to keep your shower doors and enclosure looking like new.
